How Many Years Do You Have Left?

It’s a question we often ponder, especially as we age: How many years do I have left?

There are several methods of calculating Your Innate Age Potential. First take your oldest relatives age and subtract your current age - The remainder is your minimum potential years remaining.

Dr Snouffer, Certified in Anti-Aging Medicine is offering:

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Sexual Dysfunction

Medical Weight Loss

Allergy Testing

PRP/STEM Cell Therapy

Healthy Aging is a concept that can be utilized throughout one’s life span, instead of when our own mortality is staring us in the face. Andropause (male) and Menopause (female) are defined as a life passage from adulthood into “tribal” elderhood or a mastery of life hood. This transition should not be considered as a negative thing, but as a planned experience of healthy aging that starts with birth and ends with our life passage to the next realm.

Many of our elders would be the first to say “If I had known that I would be in the shape that I am now, I would have taken better care of myself when I was younger”. It’s never too late to start, but it behooves us to start when we are young and healthy.

So where do you start? Start by assessing your goals. Where do you want to be with your health? Most of us realize that our health may never be perfect but we would like optimal health. We would like to prevent future health problems if possible. So how can we assess our risk factors?

For men most of the risk factors affecting our health stem from heart disease, prostate disease, injuries or musculoskeletal problems, and lifestyle diseases – COPD/lung problems, hypertension, obesity, digestive problems and diabetes.

For women, the risk factors for poor health include heart disease; hormone related problems, osteoporosis/bone fractures, breast/uterine cancers, as well as the same lifestyle diseases as for men. Other concerns more common in women are Migraine Headaches, mental health concerns and autoimmune disease.

What are the modifiable life style issues that will significantly improve our life quality now and in the future? Number 1 on the list would be tobacco cessation, #2 would be weight issues both high and low, #3 would be lack of meaningful activity levels to support our cardiovascular, respiration and musculoskeletal systems. These are the obvious modifiable risk factors that most of us are already well aware of and are trying to reduce. But what are the less obvious ones that can cause meaningful detriment to our health?

Various toxins get into our bodies through the water we drink, the air that we breathe, the food that we eat – chemicals, heavy metals, etc. It is not a matter of do we have toxins in our bodies, as much as how much do we have of them? Lowering our toxic load through cleaning up our diet, supplementing with detoxifying nutrients, exercise, sauna therapy and I.V. therapies, can bring us back to a more optimal health. If you think that you cannot afford to do these preventive measures, think again. Do you think that the insurance companies are going to bail you out when you get sick?

The slow decline in appearance and function that we call aging may not be fixed in our genes or part of human destiny.  In fact, medical studies have shown that aging not only can be arrested but can actually be reversed.  What we now call aging appears to be due in large part to the drastic decline of growth hormone in the body after adulthood.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

The oldest continuing anti-aging experiment is hormone replacement therapy with estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progesterone in postmenopausal women.  A far smaller but growing number of men are now taking testosterone to build muscles, increase strength, and recharge their sexual batteries.

Two other hormones, DHEA and melatonin, which also decrease with age, have been shown to have broad anti-aging and anti-disease effects on the body.

All these hormones should be part of a healthy aging program, since hormones play a controlling role in the "aging clock".

Sexual Dysfunction

In today’s hectic world, sexual problems can mean anything between “I just don’t even think about it anymore…” to a serious malfunction of sexual organs.  We have narrowed it down to 3 main areas: Circulation, Hormones, and Other Factors.

For a Consultation, please call us at – 256-237-9423.

Circulation – it’s not a shortage of the little blue pill in the drinking water.  Erectile dysfunction can signal the build up of calcified plaque in the blood vessels supplying the sexual organs.  It may be an early warning signal to an even worse cardiovascular blockage in the heart or brain circulation warning of a pending heart attack or stroke.  A simple computerized Arterial Elasticity Index (AEI) reading of arm (brachial artery) blood pressure can give an idea how stiff or calcified the arteries in the body are getting.

Similarly, a lack of blood supply to a woman’s G-spot can cause similar issues to a woman’s satisfaction with intercourse.  The treatment to circulation issues can be easily treated by removing the plaque and calcification from the arteries supplying the genital region along with natural vasodilators that enhance blood flow without the help of the “ little blue pill.”

Hormones – this is the most obvious contributor to sexual dysfunction, but there are many hormones that are involved.  Usually only one hormone is addressed, that is testosterone, for both sexes.  Too little or too much testosterone can lead to elevated levels of estrogen in men or to increased levels of 5 Hydroxy Testosterone (5HT) which can lead to baldness.  In women too much testosterone can lead to masculinization, too much hair growth in unwanted areas (face, chest), problems with acne or oily skin or deepening of the voice.  So critical monitoring is important.  Also deficiencies of Estrogen can lead to decreased sex drive in women as well as vaginal dryness and other issues.  Too much estrogen can lead to weight gain in the mid – section, breast tenderness and increased risk for breast cancer.

Other hormones may also be affecting sex drive.  Thyroid or Adrenal hormone imbalance or deficiencies can lead to being “to tired for sex.”  We are experts at recognizing and correcting these hormone dysfunctions.

Other Factors – soy and SSRI antidepressants play major roles in sexual dysfunction.  We do not recommend soy products (except organic fermented soy products are okay.)  The reasons are that soybeans are high in natural toxins, also known as anti – nutrients.  This includes a large quantity of digestive enzyme inhibitors that are needed for protein digestion.  Soybeans contain hemaglutinins that cause red blood cells to clump together and may further impair circulation.  Soy contains goiterogens, which can lead to depressed thyroid dysfunction.  Most soy beans are genetically modified therefore may contain the highest levels of pesticides contamination (which are hormone disruptors as they resemble estrogen but may interfere with normal estrogen metabolism).  Soybeans are very high in phytates, which prevent absorption of minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc – all of which are cofactors for optimal biochemistry in the body.  Finally, in an effort to remove these anti – nutrients from the final product, soybeans are taken through a series of chemical processes, including acid washes in an aluminum bath.  This leaches out some of the anti – nutrients but leaves high levels of toxic aluminum into soy products.  Also many soy products have toxic levels of manganese.  Soy formula has up to 80 times higher manganese than human breast milk.  Finally, soy blocks estrogen receptors, which may be its most important hormone disruption in sexual dysfunction.

SSRI Antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxel and others are well known for their sexual side effects such as interfering with orgasms, reducing other neurotransmitters such as dopamine and oxytocin.  Other treatments that are more natural for depression and anxiety are available.  We are experts in neurotransmitter repletion.

So, if you are struggling with sexual dysfunction, but have been too embarrasses or uninformed about natural treatment options, please set up a consultation to discuss the many treatment options that may be available to you.Indeed sexual functioning is a life long natural experience that should not go away once your reproductive years are over.  For more information or to set up a consultation  call (256)237-9423.

Healthy Weight Loss

Americans have become increasingly overweight. In fact, more than 60% of the adults are overweight and 25% are considered obese. This sets the stage for a lifetime of chronic disease. Even some of the so-called normal weight individuals have altered or unhealthy body composition, which is too much fat and not enough lean body weight (muscle).

Unhealthy body composition and excess body weight lead to obesity which is associated with the following:

Metabolic Syndrome (also known as insulin resistance or pre-diabetes) affects approximately 46% of Americans, and is characterized by high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high insulin and glucose levels. As a general rule, a waist circumference greater than 40 inches in men or greater than 35 inches in women significantly increases the risk for Metabolic Syndrome.

Factors that lead to unhealthy body composition include excess calorie intake, lack of physical activity, lifestyle influences such as a high fat, high sugar diet, overeating, excess alcohol intake, chronic use of corticosteroids, hormone imbalance (estrogen dominance), and other metabolic factors.

To achieve a healthy body composition one must lose excess fat weight while retaining lean body weight (muscle). A program that helps retain lean body weight while losing excess fat weight has proper nutrition and supplements, exercise, and reduced caloric intake. Also, it is important to assess whether overeating comes from stress, anger, depression, self-defeating attitude, or other emotional issues that need to be addressed for long-term success.

The program at ABI Health & Wellness Clinic helps to address all these issues for optimal and long-term weight management. Medical screening for Metabolic Syndrome, Hypertension, Diabetes, and Estrogen or other Hormonal Imbalances will be assessed. Lifestyle modification classes including nutritional counseling and reentry into the realm of exercise and fitness will be discussed. A non-stimulant, safe nutritional supplement that decreases appetite is available as the primary treatment modality for weight loss. Other adjunctive nutritional aides are also available.

His idea was that patients might be more motivated to get in better shape if they had a more tangible way of conceptualizing how their overall health was being affected by their conditioning. If a patient is simply told to get in shape, they’re not likely to change their behavior. But if they’re told “if you don’t get into better shape, you could be dead in five years,” they’re apt to take notice.

Of course, the test also needed to be simple. If it required expensive equipment or measuring devices, the test probably wouldn’t be accessible to many people. So Araujo and colleagues developed the sitting-rise test, or SRT. It requires no equipment whatsoever and can be performed in seconds.

Well, thanks to Brazilian physician Claudio Gil Araujo, there’s now a simple test you can perform right at home, in just a few seconds, that could predict how many years you have left to live, according to Discover.

Araujo came up with the test after noticing that many of his patients, especially older ones, often have difficulty
